Blossoms, Butterflies, and Birds

Another great day in Lakeland, Florida, a little warm and a brief shower. Hopefully the flower seeds planted last Saturday by Susan and husband Mike appreciated the drink. We had visitors yesterday on the trails taking pictures and looking at the many butterflies, one butterfly hadn't been observed this year. Only saw a few cardinals as we travelled. The Sanctuary impressed them and how many different butterflies we had, especially pleased to see the effort to preserve a large piece of nature so close to urban development.

  1. September is here and the rains are still coming. The trails are crowded with dappled sunlite and many species of butterflies. The Viceroys are hugging the shaddy areas and the Monarchs are dominant in the bright sunshine.

The Tawny Emperor, the Spicebush, Sulfurs and Gulf Fritilaries are constantly flitting about for nectar and host plants. We currently have a large grouping of Swallowtails including the Black, Polydamus, and Palmedes.

We saw our first Question Mark several times while out planting seeds. He even graced us with a visit to Garys arm to pose for a picture.

Can't wait to see what fall brings in. A few early Warblers were seen darting about along with a downy woodpecker. The rain has also increased our wading bird population with herons, egrets, and ibis.

    Hope to write more later.
    Susan
