As happens each year at this time... a few 'snowbirds' are packing and heading north. But quite a few are waiting until it warms up a little more in those northern climates!
We wish you all well, and happy travelling!
This pair of Great Blue Heron chicks, with adult standing by, was photographed in a nest along the canal. They raise quite a ruckus!
Right on cue - the Black-necked Stilts have made their appearance at Sanlan. - They're such beautiful birds, with their long neck, bold black and white pattern, and Very pink legs! At the moment, three have been hanging out at the back pond, as you leave to go toward the golf course. They may spend the breeding season ('summer') here, as this is just the southern reaches of their breeding territory. A Roseate Spoonbill, often mistaken for a Flamingo, flew over the campground yesterday morning. They also spend summer in this area and up around the Gulf coast. They can occasionally be seen at Banana Lake, and often at Circle B Bar reserve.
Some plants and shrubs are being added in the butterfly area, thanks to our volunteer gardeners. Keep your fingers crossed that they do well over the summer, and will help to bring in great butterflies next year!
